ambition, and revenge (or galantry) would "break the strongest cords of our
Constitution as a whale goes through a net."

The Extraordinary Opportunity Ahead
John Adams wrote in 1798 about the extraordinary opportunity ahead of us as
a nation. He added the caveat that if we became like other nations, soiled
by iniquity and extravagance, "... this country will be the most miserable
habitation in the world, because we have no government armed with power
capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and
religion."
